United Nations framed negotiation exercice for the PHD programmes in international relations and diplomacy
On December 12 and 13, 2019, the PhD auditors participated in CEDS facilities, to a United Nations framed negotiation exercise chaired and monitored by experts and former experts from the United Nations system and from other international organizations.
This was the 6th yearly negotiation exercise organized by CEDS for the PhD auditors on a case of conflictual situation debated inside the UN Security Council. This time it was the turn for the “Iranian nuclear deal” and the consequences of the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This concrete case was mixed with additional fictious events involving Iranian ethnic minorities, Iraq and Israel in order to make things a little bit more complicated for the players.
Each of the 38 PhD auditors enrolled for the year 2019 represented a country enjoying either the membership of UNSC for the given period or the possibility to deliver a speech in order to defend the country’s point of view and strategy.
The exercise was chaired by Hanifa MEZOUI former Head of the NGO Department at UN ECOSOC, and Representative of International Associations for Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (IAESCS) at United Nations and monitored by Isabelle BALOT, Expert at UNDP and European Union, Jacques RAO, Director of UNESCO Governing Bodies, Oliver KLEIN, Professor at Universitat Rovira I Virgile and Fouad NOHRA CEDS Academic Director.
The programme ended up after the final” UNSC meeting” and jury’s deliberation with a conference delivered by Hanifa Mezoui herself on the Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the United Nations in 2015.
The former Negotiation exercises involved the PhD auditors and were monitored by Hanifa Mezoui, Alice Hecht the former chief of protocol at the United Nations, Thérèse Gastaut Honorary Director of the UN information Department and Hassen Fodha Honorary Director of UN Office for Europe.
